The Organisation

This 12 week placement is based at Midlothian Council in Dalkeith. As Travel Engagement Officer you will be working to promote sustainable travel and help reduce CO2 emissions. You will report to the Travel and Fleet Services Manager.

Midlothian Council has carbon reduction plan in place which requires a minimum of 3% year on year reduction in carbon emissions across all sectors of the council. 

The project is to look at current travel within Midlothian Council and identify and promote alternative travel modes. The outcome of this project is to reduce the grey fleet mileage, the number of vehicles operated or hired and encourage staff to use more sustainable travel.

The project will require some desk based research and analysis but will primarily require face to face interviews and discussion with managers, supervisors and vehicle users across various services.

The Role

The focus of this project is to examine current travel behavior data within Midlothian Council and identify and promote more environmentally sustainable options.

As Travel Engagement Officer, it will be your responsibility to engage with employees within Midlothian Council at all levels. You will be required to use your communication skills to highlight alternative travel options to employees.

Midlothian Council will be working in partnership with a suitable Car Club to expand their car pool service. You will be required to liaise with the Car Club and help promote the benefits of this.

The position will require you engage with a variety of stakeholders. You will also liaise with other local authorities.

The Candidate

  • Strong communication skills

  • A full driving licence is desirable but not essential
