The Organisation

Midlothian Council is one of the 32 local authorities of Scotland. Its administrative centre is based in Dalkeith and it covers an area from the south of Edinburgh to the Borders.

Midlothian Council has carbon reduction plan in place which requires a minimum of 3% year on year reduction in carbon emissions across all sectors of the council.

Recent project work has been carried out and the successful applicant will work with data collated during this research and work towards the implementation of the recommendations contained.

The main function is to liaise with suppliers and managers to identify how best to reduce the Council’s carbon emissions through alternative modes and how this will be implemented. The outcome of this project is to reduce the grey fleet mileage; the number of vehicles operated or hired and encourage staff to use more sustainable travel.

The project will require some desk based research and analysis but will primarily require face to face interviews and discussion with suppliers, managers, supervisors and vehicle users across various services.

The Role

Much of the background work h as been done to accumulate the necessary data. So the main focus of this project is to examine that data to identify and promote more environmentally sustainable practices.

As Alternative Travel Implementation Officer, it will be your responsibility to engage with employees within Midlothian Council at all levels. You will also be required to work with other stakeholders and suppliers to build into their working practices and ours, agreements and methodologies that will ensure that our collaboration will deliver on reduced CO2 emissions.

Therefore we require an individual that is highly communicative and will be comfortable meeting with many and varied individuals in order to bring our project to fruition.

Midlothian Council will be working in partnership with a suitable Car Club to expand their car pool service. You will be required to liaise with the Car Club and help promote the benefits of this.

The key outcomes will be:

  • Reduce emissions
  • Reduce grey fleet mileage
  • Increase use of pool cars

Training will be available.
