The Organisation:

EAUC are a not-for-profit, member based charity, run by members for members. From starting out as a voluntary organisation in 1996, we have grown to represent over 2 million students and nearly 400,000 staff with a spending budget of over £25 billion. We help leaders, academics and other professionals to drive sustainability to the heart of their post-16 education institutions in the UK and internationally.  The EAUC is an independent registered charitable company, with their Headquarters based at the University of Gloucestershire and a Scotland Office based at Queen Margaret University.

With sustainability rising up Scottish Government, Scottish Funding Council and tertiary education sector agendas, the EAUC Scotland Office are currently working on an ambitious Programme to support Universities and Colleges to address their impacts on climate change and the wider sustainability agenda.

The Role:

The Sustainability in the Curriculum Intern will be leading on a new project for the small and dynamic EAUC-Scotland Team. The project involves identifying and collating examples of concepts and case studies used to introduce sustainability ideas within different teaching departments of universities and colleges.

The Intern will be expected to find examples for identified departments through desk-based research, one-to-one phone calls and discussion webinars with academics and teaching staff from different subject areas. The examples will be written up by the intern into a series of documents, which EAUC can use as resources to support our Members to embed sustainability within the curriculum.

This role has been designed to be delivered remotely, although if desired the Intern can work from the EAUC-Scotland Office at Queen Margaret University. Working hours are flexible to fit into the student’s schedule, although research webinars and phone calls, and updates with the Programme Manager, will need to be scheduled within standard office hours (9am-5pm, Monday to Friday).

The applicant should be a current undergraduate or postgraduate student at a Scottish University or College, who is enthusiastic about engaging people with sustainability ideas.

ESSENTIAL:

  • Understanding of the core concepts and interdisciplinary nature of sustainability
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to synthesise findings to identify key ideas
  • Strong IT skills, including competent use of email, internet browsers, MS Word (including formatting tools), and Google Drive for sharing documents
  • Access to a computer / laptop with internet access and MS Word
  • Video Calling facilities (microphone and camera) through either a computer/laptop or smartphone
  • Ability to manage their own workload and work without constant supervision

DESIRABLE:

  • Experience of running interviews and focus groups or chairing meetings
  • Experience of managing a project
  • Understanding of how teaching works in both colleges and universities in Scotland
  • Knowledge about and an understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals
