The Organisation

Bike for Good changes lives through cycling. It is our mission to ensure that everyone in and around Glasgow benefits from riding a bike. We ensure that cycling is accessible to all and use the humble bicycle to provide a range of opportunities which in turn:

  • Improve health and wellbeing
  • Provide travel options on a low budget
  • Improve the environment and air-quality
  • Build networks and social opportunities
  • Develop skills and confidence

We achieve this by providing a range of services and outreach projects including:

Wheel Being – a cycling for health improvement club which works with a range of health and social organisations. Aimed at people with long-term health conditions, Wheel Being provides gentle group rides, one-to-one cycle training and confidence building sessions to over 100 people a month.

  • Bike Academy – a training programme for young people aged between 12-18 years old, delivered in a youth work setting as well as in partnership with schools across the city. Aimed specifically at young people considered NEET (not in employment, employment or training), the Bike Academy offers qualifications in Bike Mechanics, Ride Leader and First
  • Community Hub – based in Govanhill, the city’s most diverse area, the Hub offers a package of free services such as cycle training lessons, bike maintenance classes, volunteering opportunities, events, group rides for all abilities, a bike lending library and a women’s cycle club. The Hub is inclusive and welcomes people who are new or returning to cycling to get back on a bike with support in a social and friendly environment.
  • Scottish Prison Service programme offering professional bike maintenance training as well as day release work experience opportunities.
  • A range of low cost bikes available for sale thanks to donations from members of the public.
  • A programme of bike maintenance training as well as Fix Your Own Bike sessions.
  • An inclusive volunteering programme for individuals.

The above is delivered by a team of experienced staff members who are committed to the delivery of high quality, high impact projects and services.
Each year we reach over 20,000 people directly through the above programme.

The Role

The role is to research and develop a Cycling Loyalty card for the South City Way. The aim of the card is to encourage greater levels of active travel in the local area. The card will be aimed at and marketed to all local potential users of the South City Way (spanning from Queen Street to Merchant City) via the neighbouring community, businesses, and community group. You will be expected to work with the Community Hub Steering Group to develop the scheme. A launch event will be held at the Community Hub including food, fun activities and music – all bike themed.

The loyalty card must be inclusive to attract the diverse Govanhill (and beyond) community. It must also be sustainable, engaging local business and community organisations to be part of the scheme long-term. It must fit local needs and bring real benefit to the people who live here.

Actions include:

  • Research other loyalty card schemes and develop a draft proposal covering - why there is a need for it, what it would be, what the offer is, how it would work, who it would aimed at and what the timescales for it would be. This will require close working with staff, volunteers, steering group, local businesses and community groups etc.
  • Present research to team internally (staff, volunteers and key stakeholders) and take on board any suggestions/feedback
  • Visit local community groups, businesses, charities and social enterprises – secure their involvement in the scheme.
  • Develop a promotions strategy to reach the target audience.
  • Brief and develop marketing material e.g. loyalty card, information leaflet, artwork (engage a local designer in this process).
  • Create content for social media (Facebook and twitter)and also the main website ( www.bikeforgood.org) and add to monthly newsletter.
  • Train up staff and volunteer team on how the scheme runs and opportunities for further development.
  • Engage a small pilot audience to test the scheme. Launch a pilot programme and review. Make any necessary changes based on feedback.
  • Plan an official launch event for the programme, inviting all stakeholders to the Hub.
  • Organize venue, invites, staff and volunteers to help, refreshments, loyalty cards and prize give aways.
  • Launch the loyalty card programme.
  • Monitor the scheme over a period of two weeks, gather feedback and make any necessary tweaks.
  • Submit report on the programme to include what was done, feedback, future opportunities.
