Bright Green Business: Mentoring Programme

Our Business Mentoring Programme equips young people with the resilience and confidence to enter further education, training  or indeed remain at school.  It also highlights the employability skills required by businesses today.

Bright Business are looking for local businesses to engage with youngsters in Midlothian to provide them with a real understanding of the current employment market by providing one-to-one mentoring to enhance their employability skills and job prospect.

We are looking to pair business people at any stage in their career, from any sector with young people 16 years plus who are looking to leave School next summer.

What do we hope to achieve?

The aim of the mentoring programme is to build the young person’s confidence and support them to be ready to move into a positive work or training destination on leaving school.

A mentoring partnership will combine staff development with helping to support, encourage and equip young people with the skills to compete in the employment market.

What will be expected from the mentor?

Each mentor will be required to commit to 1 hour per month for one academic year (this excludes the summer months June – August). The mentor and young person will decide mutually when is convenient to meet.

The mentor’s role will be to motivate, encourage, support, advise, listen and share knowledge with their mentee.

What support is available?

Bright Business Partnership will manage the administration and coordination of the programme and assist all mentors where required.

There will be a training event prior to the first mentoring visit and on–going support through out.

Mentors will be provided with a mentor manual with activities and discussion point that can aid visits.

There will be a school lead contact who will carry out all internal school coordination within school i.e. room booking, reporting if is pupil absent

How will you/ your staff benefit from participating in the programme?

Many employees are involved in this sort of activity because it helps to:

  • Develop their communication skills
  • Develop influencing skills
  • Strengthen their feedback skills
  • Boost their confidence, morale and job satisfaction
  • Understand people, their values and different perspectives
