Ian was brought up in Edinburgh and studied Geography at the University of Edinburgh. He then moved onto a career in town planning within Midlothian. Ian eventually ended up as a Director of Strategic Services. Following retirement on 2010 he has continued as a non-executive director on a number of organisations, including Edinburgh College as a Vice-Chair.
Throughout his career he has always been involved in business support going back to the original Midlothian Campaign organisation which developed into the Midlothian Enterprise Trust and now The Business Partnership. Over that time the emergence of green business has been a major element of modern-day business development.
